About Us

SOCIOS is an open peer review platform for preprints in all areas of the Social Sciences. Our mission is to foster transparency, collaboration, and innovation in academic publishing by providing a space where researchers, academics, and practitioners can share their preprints and engage in constructive peer review.

We aim to foster an environment where ideas are openly shared and rigorously evaluated through transparent peer review. By embracing open science principles, we are committed to accelerating the dissemination of knowledge and facilitating meaningful dialogue among researchers, enabling continuous development and ongoing scientific progress of research findings.

We publish a diverse range of English and German language preprints from disciplines such as sociology, political science, social and cultural anthropology, criminology, social policy, social psychology, population research, historical social research, labor market and occupational research, as well as communication sciences. We value the interconnectivity of the disciplines and welcome contributions that bridge multiple areas of study.

We welcome submissions that offer fresh insights, whether they emerge from traditional studies, innovative research designs, or novel analytical techniques. This includes exploratory studies, large-scale analyses, theory-driven inquiries, and methodological innovations. Recognizing the importance of robust and reproducible results, we particularly encourage the submission of replication studies, especially those that follow the registered report format.

We acknowledge the importance of all research outcomes, including single findings, null results, and negative findings. Such contributions are essential for a balanced scientific inquiry and are welcomed with equal enthusiasm.

Our publications include various article types, allowing for a wide array of research formats and methodologies.

Project and Partners

SOCIOS is a project of the University and City Library of Cologne, funded by the German Research Foundation, and realized in cooperation with four Social Sciences Information Services:

FID Criminology | KrimDok

The Criminological Information Service focuses on providing comprehensive literature and information on criminology. It has one of the largest stocks of specialized literature world wide regarding criminology, which contains about 120,000 monographs, 240 active journal subscriptions, and a significant number of digital documents in repositories like DigiKrimDoc. The main research tool is the KrimDok database, which contains about 295,000 references as of April 2023. FID Criminology ensures the scientific community has access to essential criminological resources.

Funded by the DFG since 2014, the FID Criminology is operated by a cooperation between the university library and the criminological department of the University of Tübingen.

FID Political Science | pollux

The Specialised Information Service for Political Science aims to provide political scientists with specialized literature and research-relevant information. It offers access to around 12 million political science publications, Factiva newspaper archives, Polit-X monitoring services, and various e-books. Pollux also supports open access publishing and research data management.

Funded by the DFG since 2016, the FID Political Science is managed by the State and University Library Bremen (SuUB) , GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences, and Qualiservice.

FID Social and Cultural Anthropology | EVIFA

The Specialised Information Service for Social and Cultural Anthropology supports researchers by providing resources and research access, addressing infrastructural issues, and facilitating discussions within the ethnological disciplines. Under the DFG's FID funding, FID SKA focuses on acquiring and providing information resources, negotiating licences for electronic resources, managing research data, and archiving academic estates. They also work on enhancing the Integrated Authority File to better index ethnographic literature.

FID Sociology | SocioHub

The Specialised Information Service for Sociology focuses on improving information provision, research communication, and open-access availability. It develops key elements like research modules, collaboration portals, and open-access components, based on identified needs within the sociological community.

Funded by the DFG since 2016, the Specialised Information Service for Sociology is managed by the University and City Library of Cologne and GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences, with Qualiservice joining in 2022.
